Alva Denise Rials Overby Hicks, affectionately known as Denise, passed away on April 17, 2026, at Commonwealth Senior Living. She was born on August 4, 1961, in Hickory, North Carolina.
Denise was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose love for her family was the center of her life. She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the primary care setting, dedicating her career to caring for others with compassion and kindness. Denise was known for her warm heart, strong spirit, and the lasting friendships she cherished throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Willoughbye Hicks, Jr.; grandson, Jacob William Overby; sister, Sara Malinda Ward; brother, Rodney Lorne Ward; her beloved grandparents who raised her, Maude and Melvin Lackey, affectionately known as Mama Bear and Papa Bear; and stepfather, John Wesley Ward, Sr.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Joseph Allen Overby (Brenda) of Buffalo Junction, Virginia; Jeremy Allen Overby of Nelson, Virginia; and Jessica Lauren Barrett (Daniel) of Dante, Virginia. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Justin Overby, Brittany Overby, Jenna Overby, Jaylen Overby, Charlotte Barrett, and Wyatt Barrett; and four great grandchildren.
She is further survived by her father, Joseph Harold Rials, Sr. of Youngsville, Louisiana; mother, Faye Carter Lutz of Connelly Springs, North Carolina; several sisters and brothers; her lifelong best friend of 50 years, Pam Jeffers (Enley) of Clarksville, Virginia; and many special nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Denise’s caring nature, devotion to family, and gentle presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Rejoice Worship Center, 117 Rejoice Lane, Castlewood, Virginia, 24224. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
