It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Wayne "Donnie" Harris, age 75, of Abingdon, Va., who departed this life on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. His earthly journey is a testament to resilience and dedication, having taken on various roles throughout his life, including that of a transfer truck driver, coal miner, and construction worker.
Born on January 24, 1950, in Saltville, Va., Donnie was the cherished son of the late Benjamin Richard Harris and Mary Kathleen Puckett Harris. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jeff Harris and Dale Harris; and two grandchildren, Mikey Harris and Skarlette Hoover.
He found solace and happiness in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid gardener and a passionate fisherman, often spending his days nurturing his plants and enjoying the tranquility of nature.
He leaves behind his devoted wife of 26 years, Ora Kay Ward Harris, who was his steadfast companion. Together, they created a loving home, filled with warmth and laughter. Donnie is survived by his four children: Missy Holbrook and her husband, Gary, of Abingdon, Va.; Tracy Sheets and her husband, Jamie, of Marion, Va.; Joshua Hoover and his wife, Brittany, of Meadowview, Va.; and Desiree Hoover of Abingdon, Va. He also leaves his brother, Ben Harris and his wife, Bonnie, of Stuart, Va.; sister-in-law, Gail Harris; former sister-in-law, Dixie Page; and his precious granddaughter, Kylee Hoover.
A memorial service to honor Donnie's life will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, located at 13 Heritage Dr., Bristol, Va. 24201, with Bishop Michael Keohane officiating.
