Monna Jo Bradley Hortenstine, age 79, of Abingdon, Va. and formerly of Norcross, Ga., passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at Abingdon Health & Rehab Center.
She was born April 15, 1946, to the late Glen Wallace Bradley and Lucille Pickle Bradley in Abingdon, Va.
Monna was a quietly amazing human being with qualities of strength, honesty, generosity and kindness. She had a way of making people feel seen, valued and accepted; loving her family without reservation. She was married to and adored her soulmate of 57 years. Her faith in God was a defining trait. His tiny creations never ceased to astound her. Sitting on her porch is where you would find her most days. Or in her yard, working to keep its park-like view.
We will miss the stories she shared, the way she laughed with us, the way she held us and the way she loved us. She was truly one of a kind. Her legacy will live in the hearts of her children and grandchildren. We will carry her love, her lessons, and her spirit with us always.
In addition to her parents, Monna was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Jason Oran Waters; granddaughter, Ava Elizabeth Waters; brother, Larry Wallace Bradley; and two sisters, Dottie Bradley Davis and Alice Bradley Porterfield.
Monna is survived by her husband of 57 years, Joel Carlton Hortenstine; daughter, Sarah Hortenstine Waters of Abingdon, Va.; son, Joel Andrew Hortenstine, daughter in law, Katy McKeever Hortenstine, both of Auburn, Ala.; sister, Baja Bradley Conrad of Abingdon, Va.; two brothers, Don L. Bradley of Roanoke, Va. and Glen Michael “Mickey” Bradley and wife, Alice, of Knoxville, Tenn.; five grandchildren: Jacob Oran Waters of Statesboro, Ga.; Joel Robert Waters of Abingdon, Va.; Ella Katherine Hortenstine; Raleigh Wilson Hortenstine; and Everett Marshall Hortenstine all of Auburn, Ala.; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
